Interview

During my interview, I talked to a teacher with a majority of special needs children in her class. Some diagnosed and some are suspected, some are medicated and some are not. This interview helped with my decision about my topic being about Special needs. I plan to focus my research paper on Young Children In Special Education. My three topics are: Medicating youg children: Labeling children as having a mental illnesses: The age doctors should diagnosis and treat a mental illness in young children. Questions: 1. What mental disorders can you detect? 2. WHat age do you think doctors should diagnosis a child with a mental disorder? 3. WHat are some mental disorders that are commonly diagnosed?

  1. As a professional we can not comment alone on what mental disorders are. That is why we have to have an assessment team. If a child does not do well on developmental guidelines then we call in a mental health consultant, we have parents fill out a questioner and then we have a meeting. No child is to young to be observed. That is our job as a ECE professional,
According to recent news reports Autism is on the rise. That now covers any language delay.Obesity can be considered a mental illness depending on reports that are coming out.

    1. Luz, I agree with you. But I just feel like so many times young children get unnessecarally labeled and medicated. And all that does is mask the real problems. I'm learning! :)

  2. Hello Shanteelliott,

Remember children are not labeled, we as professional do what we can to help each child. I believe children deserve the best education they can received. We as educators do what we can and we assess children to find out if they need further observation or evaluation.
